Mr Stephen Mark

Consultant Urologist

Stephen’s research experience began during a fellowship in Christchurch where he studied smooth muscle physiology of the bladder. Through a Reconstruction and Urodynamic Fellowship with George Webster at Duke University Medical Centre (Durham, U.S.A.) and a Paediatric Fellowship with David Frank at Bristol Children’s Hospital (Bristol, UK), he has been involved in the establishment and maintenance of a variety of clinical trials. He has been a Principal Investigator in BPH, erectile dysfunction, post op analgesia and paediatric overactive bladder trials. A co-investigator in prostate cancer treatment and prevention trials, erectile dysfunction and adult overactive bladder trials.

Mr Peter Davidson

Consultant Urologist

Peter Gained his experience in clinical trials whilst working with Professor Fritz Schroeder at the Dijkzigt Hospital, Rotterdam. Here he was involved with the maintenance of patients enrolled in various EORTC trials, and also in the establishment of the Pan-European Prostate Cancer Screening Study. Further experience was gained in his time as a Fellow at the South Western Medical School in Dallas. He has been a Principal Investigator in prostate cancer treatment and prevention trials and erectile dysfunction. A co-investigator in BPH and overactive bladder trials.

Dr Sharon English

Consultant Urologist

Sharon gained her experience in clinical trials during a Fellowship with Dr Ed Maguire at the University of Texas. Her work here involved setting up and administering both university and pharmaceutical company trials in one of America’s leading incontinence centres. She has been a Principal Investigator in an overactive bladder trial and several stress incontinence device trials. A co-investigator in Irritable bowel syndrome, BPH, prostate cancer treatment and prevention trials.

Dr Jane MacDonald

Consultant Urologist

Jane was involved in clincal research during her fellowship with Professor Tony Mundy at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology in London, UK. She later worked with Dr Hugh Flood in Limerick, Ireland and was involved with clinical trials in female urinary incontinence. She is a principal investigator in an overactive bladder trial. She is also a co-investigator in prostate and other overactive bladder trials.

Dr Frank Kueppers

Consultant Urologist

Frank trained at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel/Germany. He gained his basic research experience there and in Vienna/Austria. He worked scientifically in the field of protection against radiation and chemotherapy damage in an animal model and wrote a thesis about nephroprotection under Cisplatinum treatment. His other interest is IT in medicine, his department in Kiel was the first paperless department in Germany.

As part of his oncologic clinical work he was co-investigator in several EORTC and national trials in Germany. He designed a GCP conform phase II trial in early relapse of prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy.

Mr Nicholas Buchan

Consultant Urologist

Nick gained his experience in medical trials while on fellowship at the Vancouver Prostate Centre. The Vancouver Prostate Centre is one of the largest research and clinical centres in the world that focuses on traditional research into prostatic diseases, prostate cancer in particular. He was involved in a number of North American and Canadian based trials, including phase II and III drug trials. He is a co-investigator on a prostate cancer trial and Peyronie’s disesase trial.

Mr Kevin Bax

Consultant Urologist

Kevin trained at the University of Cape Town in South Africa, before moving to New Zealand in 1999. Drawn to the West Coast by the rural community and wonderful fly fishing of the South Island, he began his surgical training in Greymouth. He completed his advanced urology training in Adelaide where he worked at hospitals affiliated with both Flinders University and the University of South Australia, then did an extended Urology Fellowship in uro-oncology and robotics with David Gillet through the Bristol Urological Institute.

Dr Nigel Gilchrist

Specialist Physician

Nigel is a specialist Physician and Consultant with particular expertise in osteoporosis and health care of the elderly.  He established the Canterbury Geriatric Medical Research Trust and has experience in the running of clinical trials through this Trust.  He is a trustee of CURT and a consultant to the trust.

Mr Hans van Schreven


Hans is a solicitor with Clark Boyce and an Administrative Trustee of CURT.  He has considerable experience in this area and also is an Administrative Trustee of the Canterbury Geriatric Medical Research Trust.

Barbara Gordon

Barbara has been involved in clinical research since August 2001.  She has experience in patient based surveys, pharmaceutical and device trials for the following conditions; Irritable bowel, constipation, prostate cancer, prostate cancer prevention, bladder cancer, stress incontinence, overactive bladder and rheumatoid arthritis. Barbara is highly experienced in ethics applications.

Liz Mitchell

Liz has been involved in clinical research since May 2000. Liz  has many years experience in pharmaceutical trials including but not limited to the following conditions; Influenza, prostate cancer treatment and prevention, overactive bladder, bladder cancer and osteoarthritis. Liz is involved in contract and budget negotiations.
